Decoding and Tracking All in One!!!!
Are your little ones not using their pointer finger to track print while reading? Are they guessing the words? Do they play with the finger puppets and finger lights you give them? Are you as frustrated as I was? Then hopefully this tool will help you like it did me and my little readers.
My students can't get enough of the Beanie Baby Decoding animals! They LOVE them. They want to have them right there on the table or next to them. They want to hug them and take them home. I understand. Who wouldn't love a cute cuddly animal that helps you learn to read? Except... when the students start to get distracted by them while reading. I needed to find a way to keep the Beanies visible but not so tempting to reach out and pet. I came up with this solution...and it works.
I described this as a super reading tool that will help give their little fingers a much needed break. I also explained that while their Beanie friends are AWESOME, stopping to pet and play with them can be bad for reading. So...now we are able to take our Beanie friends with us one each and every page we read! They truly love it!
It works great as a bookmark too! All the sizing and work in creating these is done for you. Simply print them, cut them out, and glue them onto jumbo craft sticks. This project cost me as little as pennies to make for my students. The craft sticks were $2.99 at Hobby Lobby but after my 40% off coupon=$1.80 for 75. The paper was ....nothing really, and what teacher doesn't have glue sticks on hand? You can also print, laminate, and glue for more durability. Mine are on simple copy paper and have lasted all year. So I have enough in this pack to make 3 year's worth!
Here's what I used:
-jumbo craft sticks
-my print out
-scissors
-glue stick
