Comprehension is such a complex task. So many times our lessons fall into a systematic trap of repetitive teaching strategies and valuable time is lost to hum drum lessons. Since my job as a Reading Specialist focuses directly with struggling readers, I have tried to make my lessons worth everyone's time by introducing, practicing, and using lifelong tools that carry over to their reading in the classroom as well as at home.
I have found so much success with the use of the Beanie Baby decoding strategies for decoding. The kids grasp the concepts extremely fast no matter the age. They are easy to remember due to the connection with the animal and the kids use them excitedly.
Using that information, I dreamed of creating an easier way to use strategies (with tools) to help my struggling readers grasp and practice the extremely complex task of comprehending.
I just finished introducing and teaching follow-up lessons on Visualizing Bat. I found a beautifully written and cohesive story to introduce Visualizing Bat. I used the book, Nightsong by Ari Berk. I have attached a video reading of the book for you to view. Once you hear this story, you will see why it is perfect story to introduce the concept of visualizing.
Note: To preface the story explain the science behind how most bats "see". They use ecolocation.

Then have the students listen to how Chiro's mother teaches this skill to him and also how Chiro uses it to "see."
